San Clemente pitches another shutout
Jaxson Rex scored on offense and defense as the 7-0 Tritons blanked Los Alamitos 40-0. Next: Mission Viejo, with the Alpha League lead on the line.
LOS ALAMITOS — San Clemente has played two Alpha League games. Nobody has scored on it yet.
The Tritons beat Los Alamitos 40-0 on Friday night, a week after shutting out Yorba Linda 28-0, and Jaxson Rex made sure the Griffins never had a chance to get comfortable. He caught a touchdown pass, returned an interception for another and added a sack.
San Clemente (7-0, 2-0) is 7-0 for the first time since 2017.
It took a while to open up. The Tritons led only 7-0 after a quarter, then scored 13 points in the second to go up 20-0 at halftime and pushed it to 27-0 midway through the third. The defense finished with five sacks, and Tate Bollard had an interception to go with four tackles.
It was San Clemente’s most lopsided win of the season and its 10th win in its last 11 road games. For Los Alamitos (0-7, 0-2), it was the first time all year the Griffins were shut out, and the losing streak reached eight games dating to last season. They play Edison next week.
Circle Friday
Now the Tritons get the game the Alpha League schedule has been building toward. Mission Viejo comes to San Clemente on Friday, Oct. 16. Both teams are 2-0 in league play.
Mission Viejo needed a two-point stop in the final 91 seconds to beat Yorba Linda 27-26 on Thursday. San Clemente hasn’t been in a game like that in weeks. Friday will tell us whether that’s a strength or something it hasn’t had to find out yet.
